In short
In Northern Ireland, the Sexual Offences (Northern Ireland) Order 2008 defines consent as agreeing by choice with the freedom and capacity to choose. Sexual health clinics run by the health and social care trusts are free and confidential. Report scams to Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040. Adults.co.uk members must be 18 or over.
| Report a scam | Report Fraud, 0300 123 2040 |

Northern Ireland is a small place, and anyone who dates here knows the feeling of being two introductions away from everybody. That makes discretion more than a nicety. It also helps to know that the law and the health service work a little differently from the rest of the UK.

The law on consent
In Northern Ireland, a person consents if they agree by choice and have the freedom and capacity to make that choice. Sexual offences are covered by the Sexual Offences (Northern Ireland) Order 2008, not the English Act, though article 3 defines consent in the same words used in England and Wales. Someone who is asleep, too drunk to choose, or being threatened cannot consent.
For adult dating that means a clear yes, nothing assumed from a flirty conversation or an agreement to meet, and the freedom for either of you to change your mind at any point. Our consent guide covers it from first message to first meeting, and talking about desires and limits helps you agree the details beforehand.
Intimate images
Northern Ireland has its own offence for image abuse. Under section 51 of the Justice Act (Northern Ireland) 2016, it is a crime to disclose, or threaten to disclose, a private sexual photograph or film of someone without their consent, intending to cause them distress. If it happens to you, report it to the PSNI and contact the Revenge Porn Helpline, which supports adults across the UK and can help get images taken down.
Sexual health in Northern Ireland
Sexual health (GUM) clinics in Northern Ireland are run by the health and social care trusts. They are free and confidential, and you don't need a GP referral. GUM stands for genitourinary medicine. nidirect, the official government information site, lists current services.
Health and social care is organised by area through five trusts: Belfast, Northern, South Eastern, Southern and Western. Many clinics work by appointment, so it's worth booking a routine check before you need one urgently.
A sensible routine for adult daters here:
- Find your nearest clinic on nidirect and note how it books.
- Book a check after a new partner, and regularly if you have several.
- If you have symptoms, or a condom has failed, phone the clinic straight away and say so.
Testing is a routine part of adult dating, not a sign that something has gone wrong. Our sexual health guide explains what a check involves, along with condoms, PrEP and PEP.
Reporting scams and crime
Northern Ireland is covered by Report Fraud, the national fraud and cybercrime reporting service, on 0300 123 2040. Use it for dating scams, sextortion and other fraud. If money has already left your account, call your bank first on 159.
For other crimes, contact the PSNI on 101, or 999 in an emergency. When you report, have ready the profile name, the dates of contact, screenshots of messages and any payment details.
Report the member to us too, through the members help centre; the safety page explains what to include. Our guide to scams and sextortion describes how these schemes usually unfold.
Support after abuse or assault
The Rowan is Northern Ireland's regional sexual assault referral centre, run by the Northern Health and Social Care Trust. It supports women, men and children who have been raped or sexually assaulted, whether recently or in the past, and is open 24 hours a day, all year, on 0800 389 4424. For adults, forensic evidence can be stored until you decide whether to report to the police, so you don't have to make that decision straight away.
The Domestic and Sexual Abuse Helpline is free, confidential and open 24 hours a day on 0808 802 1414, for anyone affected by domestic or sexual abuse, of any gender. You don't need to have gone to the police to call.
Meeting safely in Northern Ireland
In a place this size, discretion and safety go together. Before a first meeting:
- Choose somewhere public where neither of you is a regular.
- Agree what you'll both keep private, before you meet rather than after.
- Plan the journey home before the evening starts if you live outside Belfast or Derry; late public transport can be limited.
- Tell a friend where you're going and when you'll check in.
Raising discretion early is a courtesy, not an accusation. An example of how people put it in a message: "Before we meet, I'd like to keep this between the two of us, and I'll do the same for you. Does that suit you?" Anyone worth meeting will agree, and if you later find you have friends in common, neither of you needs to explain anything.
Meeting across the border
If a match lives in the Republic of Ireland, or you meet there, remember that you're under a different legal system with different services. The police there are An Garda Síochána, and both 999 and 112 reach the emergency services. If something happens while you're there, report it to the Gardaí rather than the PSNI, and look up local sexual health and support services before you travel.
Our first meeting safety plan has the full checklist, and how Adults.co.uk works covers the site itself, including the fact that profiles are shared with partner sites in the same network.
Clubs and events
We haven't yet verified any licensed lifestyle venue in Northern Ireland to list here. We only list venues once we've checked their own current information, and we never list public places. Our guide to swinging and lifestyle clubs explains how licensed clubs and private parties work in the UK.
